Wrong content can hurt more than you think

This is something I am speculating because it is just observation. However it is rather common sense and can be explained.
Here’s my speculation:

A wrong content in your blog could hurt your adsense targeting more than you think

Of course you know that Adsense read your page and determines what ads to serve up. For example on this page you very much see ads on blogging.

No adsWhat can happen, however, is that your intented content may has a much stronger influence than what you expected.

A while back I posted an about a motorcycle movie on my motorcycle blog. My intention was really to share a movie about motorcycle. What I did not expect was that Adsense was very much influenced by the content this post.

What happened?

  1. Ads related to movie stunt and DVD starts appearing.
This is certainly due to the post because it is the only one about stunt and appears after the post.
  2. Motorcycle related ads replaced by blogging ads
There were consistently motorcycle related ads for some time before the post. After that post, motorcycle ads are less frequent, replaced mainly by blogging ads.
  3. Ads stop appearing and replaced by public service ads
No ads

The only reasonable conclusion is that Google is very much influenced and confused by the content in the post.

For some time, I had written motorcycle related articles and Google had picked up that focus. The post on the movie, however, threw the Adsense bot off guard. The movie must had been more strongly related to stunts and DVD than motorcycle.

In fact the effect of including the movie made Adsense reconsider and decide that it may not be a motorcycle site after all. Therefore, blog ads start appearing then ads stopped altogether.

The lesson learnt is

Wrong content can hurt you more than you think.

Popularity: 1%

Google rely on the keywords density in your content. If you want the ads on motorcyle stunt to show up, write more keywords related to the terms. The problem is that not all keywords and terms have related ads.

    Agree.

However it seems that some keywords has more weght than others. In this case, a single mention of the movie changes everything on the page.
