You must be familar with the idea of “sharpening your saw“.
No? The idea is this.
Imagine you are a woodcutter and you are paid by the number of pieces of wood you cut. The saw is a tool that you use to cut the wood. As you use the saw, the cutting edges become blunt. As a result more and more time and energy is needed to cut through the same piece of wood. However if you stop to sharpen the saw, you will not get paid.
The clever woodcutter of course know when is the optimal time to stop and sharpen the saw so that the cutting can continue with minimal delay and maximal efficiency.
It is the same with seeking revenue online. Let me explains with an example.
Often we spend so much time trying to create revenue and we forget to sharpen the tool that help use create the revenue.
Take a step back. Look at what are tools that we are using. How can we sharpen them?
I will use a very familiar example. Google Adsense.
Many of us use Google Adsense. It is a tool to help us create revenue. But how many of you really sharpen it?
What do I mean by sharpen? How do I sharpen it?
When I started, I used to just copy the ad code from Adsense and paste it on the page. I did not bother to find out about the details behind using Adsense.
One day I have some time on hand and I browsed the Google Adsense Help Center. That was when I discovered there are so many things to it then just sticking the code to a page. If you have not visit it, I recommend that you do.
Visit the Optimizatoin Tips, read some of the case studies. Read how Weblogs Inc, which was mentioned few days back, grew blog ad revenue from $200 to $3000 a day.
Another source of information is the (official) Adsense blog.
Didn’t know Adsense has a blog? You are not alone. Many people use Adsense on their blog but is not aware that the Adsense team maintain a blog themselves.
I talked about Adsense account getting suspended. Well, the Adsense blog has some suggestion on how to keep your account alive and well.
Of course there are many other great resources on the Internet. If you know of one, share it with me.
So sharpen your Adsense tool, you will find that you are able to get more with the same effort.
