Poor converting sites can hurt you

I am taking down Adsense on a few sites as a test after reading how one poorly converting site can “smart price” an entire AdSense account.

This was pretty old news (posted Oct 2005, a year ago) and it is a surprise that I had not ran across it all these while.

How much truth this piece of information still holds? Maybe my test and some research will show some results.

Interestingly I found this new marketing spin call “The Death of Adsense“

Normally I get bombarded with so many “marketing guru” email daily that I just ignore the pitch. But something about it caught my attention.

First was the graphic, impactful, shocking, got my attention.

Then it was the free report. Yeah I got lots of free reports saved on my harddisk. Wouldn’t mind adding another to the collection. Why not?

Then I found that I was duped! The guy before got paid $0.50 just for me to download it. (That’s Fifty, five-o, 1/2 a dollar, NOT a fraction of a cent!)

What! The guy behind this spin is on drug or he is crazy or both! A viral marketing like this would create thousands if not tens of thousand of download. And he is paying for each download!

Well, what you waiting for? Click here to bust this guy and earn me 50 cents.

The biggest lie about Making Money Online

The biggest lie floating around Making Money Online goes like this

If I can do it so can you.

This is what some “famous marketers” are using to get to you to buy their “ebook”. It is an outright lie.

Why?

Simply because the fact that someone can do it does not mean that you can. This is a logical fallacy.

Liu Xiang can run the 110m hurdle in 12.88s, can you do it even if he coaches you?
Steve Pavlina made over $200/day from his blog. Notice he is not offering to sell you an ebook to show you how. He tells you how for free. Even then, can you do it?

So think about it when you see sites or advertisements with message like this:

“I make $99,999 with Adsense, so can you.“
“I make $88,888 with Affiliates, you can too.“

In the end who is making more money? You or the guy selling you the information?

If they are already making so much with Adsense, why are they spending so much time and trying so hard to sell you the information?

There are enough free resources that give you the same thing. The next time you pull out your credit card to buy one of those, think again. Do not be the next fool.

I believe many people brought such program from these self-proclaimed famous marketer, which is why you see so many of such program floating around cyberspace.

Are the people too busy making 100k per month? Or are they too shy to say they had been duped?

I come across so many sites claiming to be successful, famous marketer that I wonder if they are really worth their salt, or rather word.

Disclosing Affiliate Links?

The views on disclosing affiliate links differs widely.

A while back Weblog Tools Collection introduced Text Link Ads (referral) with a referral link and Matt quickly pointed out that referral links should be disclosed.

Later, another post was quick to point out that the link is not a referral.

What is your opinion on disclosing affiliate links?

Having been on the reader’s side and now standing on the publisher side, I know the debate well.

As a reader, I do not like to be tricked into clicking on referral links. I had even seen link saying something but linking to another. However I do not mind giving the publisher the referral if the information is useful. Anyway it is someone else that is paying, so why not make someone happy.

As a publisher, the concern is readers bypassing the referral. Each click is a potential earning and if I can get more people to click, all the better.

Is there a balance?

My decision is to disclose affiliate referral using the title attributes in the link tag and if necessary mentioning it. I hope the reader will appreciate this action as a sincere introduction and give me the referral if I deserve it.

How many famous marketer do you know?

Everyday I get emails from some famous marketer or people talking about some famous marketer.
I did subscribe to the some of the newsletters but it is anyone’s guess how the others got to my email.

Anyway, I’m not talking about spam today. I cannot take all these name dropping marketing plot anymore!

Here’s an example,

I was speaking with Cody Moya the other day (a well-known Internet Marketer), and he started talking about his main profitability secret.

He told me how he was able to earn close to half million dollars on the Internet because of just one success factor.

Here’s another

Last March I met a marketer named Joe Cooper from the UK, at a meeting in Washington DC. What I liked most about him is that he’s just an all-around nice kid, and in spite of being an up-and-coming hotshot marketer, he really didn’t care about impressing people at the event.

Now tell me, how many of you know these guys?

There are more. You could easily make a list and I’m going to try this experiment,

Make a list of all the names mentioned in the next 1 week.
List these names and see if you have heard of them.
